Embracing Festive Flavors with a Fiery Twist

As the holiday season unfolds, the desire for culinary adventures that ignite the taste buds grows stronger. In the spirit of infusing excitement into our Christmas gathering, I bring you a dish that melds tradition with a vibrant kick: Tteokbokki.

Understanding Tteokbokki’s Significance

Pronounced “tok-bo-kee,” this dish holds a cherished place not just on the Korean dinner table but also in the hearts of those seeking warmth and flavor in every bite. Tteokbokki, featuring chewy cylindrical rice cakes bathed in a vibrant and spicy sauce, is a staple street food and a go-to comfort dish in Korea. Its popularity transcends occasions—it’s relished at celebrations, gatherings, and even as a quick snack on bustling streets. The allure of Tteokbokki lies in its ability to evoke a sense of comfort and nostalgia, making it a constant companion in various life events.

Ingredients:

  • 2 pound cylinder-shaped rice cakes (tteok)
  • 4 sheets square fish cake (160g)
  • 2 cups cabbage, cut into bite-sized pieces (160g)
  • 3 cups green onion, diagonally sliced (240g)
  • 1 liter water
  • 3 hard-boiled eggs
  • 1/3 cup red chili paste (80g)
  • 1/3 cup dark soy sauce (50g)
  • 1/3 cup fine red pepper powder (30g)
  • 1/3 cup coarse red pepper powder (20g)
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar (70g)
  • Sesame seeds and sliced green onions for garnish (optional)

Preparation:

  1. Prepare the Rice Cakes: Soften the rice cakes by soaking them in warm water for 15-20 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  2. Create the Flavorful Sauce: In a pot, combine water, dark soy sauce, brown sugar, red chili paste, coarse red pepper powder, fine red pepper powder, green onions, and cabbage. Bring to a boil.
  3. Incorporate the Rice Cakes and other ingredients: Once the sauce boils, add the hard-boiled eggs, rice cakes, and wheat flour cakes. Continue cooking.
  4. Adding the fish cakes: When the sauce boils again, add the fish cakes. Continue cooking until the sauce reaches the desired consistency.
  5. Garnish and Serve: If desired, garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions before serving.
